Mentorships
When I have time I offer mentorships to writers of all levels. I usually advertise these, but you can contact me at any time to enquire about them and get your name put on my waiting list. Mentorships are my favourite form of teaching and they involve me teaching writers one-to-one in private, either in person or by telephone or Skype locally or internationally. I run mentorships for only about five people at a time, usually less, so I am able to give writers a great deal of my time.
My mentorships provide an alternative for new writers to film school courses (in which, because of budget cuts, writers are liable to find themselves in classes of twenty or more, with limited one-on-one feedback), and an opportunity for experienced writers to extend their skills in highly-specialised and advanced techniques privately and at their much faster speed. Mentorships permit me to provide a very high level of personalised interaction and feedback and, while I enjoy teaching of all kind, the greatest fascination for me is to work intensively with individual writers to find their unique strengths and problem areas and then, with the writer's assistance (because this is very much a joint exercise), to find methods to help them in those areas for the rest of their careers.
Mentorships permit me to work with writers to develop their unique voice and refine their personal skills, not just to transmit theory or edit a given script. The beauty of the process is that I can devote my full attention to you, 100%, with the mentorship tailored around you, not the demands of a syllabus or degree timetable.
